Susan Luker Potter
burnished and smoked Raku
Featured potter: 2000 This Land of Ours
Artist's Profile: Susan Luker graduated from Plymouth College of Art and Design in ceramics and has now established her own studio workshop in idyllic South Devon.
The countryside is her primary source of inspiration, which is reflected in the smooth slab-built forms with rippling lines of copper, blue and green Raku glazes.
Susan Luker enjoys the creative process of hand building, using resist slips, glazing to achieve different effects and finally the Raku firing and smoking of her sculptural pots.
Her challenge is slab building large pieces. They are all hand formed, no use is made of moulds or shapers. Each form is individually hand sculpted. Once made, the burnishing is a labour of love. Using a smooth pebble, together they create a very tactile sculptural pot with a silky, satin surface. Every one will also form its own unique crackle markings during the firing process.
Susan Luker is an Associate Member of the Craft Potters Association and a Member of the West Country Potters Association.
All the work shown on this page was exhibited at The CoA in 2000.
