Smoked & burnished vessels
Kim Middleton Ceramic Artist
Exhibitor The Chapel of Art, Criccieth, Wales, UK
Featured potter: 2000 Pots Galore 2001 Flower Power
Artist's Profile: Kim Middleton makes hand-built vessels and forms, sculpted and carved in fine white earthenware and unglazed terracotta, using various image sources. She aims to produce work that has lasting grace and poise. Pots which rise gracefully from a base to a flamboyant rim are currently particular favourites. (see image 4 and 5 right)
Kim Middleton's more recent work is smoked, introducing a random element which contrasts with the controlled hand-building and carving. She carves quite deeply into the pots to introduce different levels of relief to the surface.
Using terra sigillata, which is a very fine slip or liquid clay surface treatment, the surface of the work is silky smooth and Kim often highlights elements in her individually carved designs with gold lustre or stained terra sigillata.
Although mainly decorative and non-functional, Kim Middleton occasionally glazes enclosed vessels on the inside, so they can be used as vases or pots.
Kim Middleton is another Path Maker and contributor to The International Potters' Path. She studied Industrial Ceramics at Stafford College of Art. She exhibits throughout the Midlands and Home Counties with work on permanent exhibition at selected galleries, including The Chapel of Art.
